The website has outlined important aspects of co-teaching and the potential co-teaching has to improve student learning. If executed correctly, benefits could abound. However, teamwork is difficult, as is the process of collaboration. It is important that co-teachers commit themselves to the model and one another so that students actually benefit from the model. Many reports indicate relationships that do not work, and it is important to change these so that the theoretical benefits will reach the classroom (Keefe & Moore, 2004; Mastropieri et al., 2005; Trent et. al, 2003). One author notes,
The goal of co-teaching and research in this area should be the success of all students in the general education setting” (Dieker, 2001, p. 22)
If implemented incorrectly, the education of the students in the classroom is at stake. Therefore, it should only be attempted if true commitment is applied so that students are benefitting from all co-teaching has to offer.
